The details may from the U.S. but we in the U.K. are no different when it comes to Advent and Christmas.
From my Franciscan perspective it ticks all the right boxes.

Thankfully, the work of God goes on.

We are now into Day 6 without any water feed to our house. Last week we discovered that the pipe from the water main had sprung a leak right under the foundations. Because of this, the Loss Adjusters have to come out and assess if there is any damage. The irony is we most likely will have to pay for the repair of the pipe as it is all down to wear and tear.

At the moment we are making do with water containers and what supply we have from the water-but in the garden. We received some funny looks yesterday when we filled up a number of containers from the church kitchen!

Of course, we are surviving. We do not have to walk miles to get water and what we have is clean and drinkable, unlike in many parts of the world. However, all this got me to thinking.

God’s Holy Spirit is often described in the Bible as living water. God wants us to be ‘connected’ to the main: by that I mean he wants us to be constantly drawing on His Spirit, day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute.

However, I know that I have the tendency to try to ‘bottle’ the Spirit and just draw on Him/Her when I have a need; I suspect that is the case for a number of Christians. We try to get by on what we receive on retreat, conference, or services on Sunday etc. The thing is all of that is quite an effort and not all together efficient.

Sure, like as in our situation with the water, we get by, but life is much better when we are permanently connected to the source. That is God’s will for his people. All the pipes are laid, the source is connected, we simply have to tun the tap and enjoy.
